“Could”

I am starting to find it irritating how the media are using the word “could”. This has been particularly prevalent in respect of COVID-19 where they continually quote experts who say so and so “could” happen.

“Could” on its own is pretty meaningless without an indication of the likelihood as most things “could” happen. “Could” covers a spectrum from extremely unlikely to possible to likely etc. The only things it probably does not include are “will” and “will not”

Using “could” in the way the media does just causes fear and anxiety and to be honest I think it’s pretty irresponsible.

More care in my opinion does need to be taken with the language used.
